There’s something about the ocean that mirrors life so perfectly—its rhythm, its unpredictability, its quiet power.
Recently, I took a much-needed break and traveled to Diani Beach—arguably one of Kenya’s cleanest and most breathtaking coastal destinations. For us Nairobians, the beach is more than a getaway; it’s therapy. Let's face it—we haven’t built a beach in Nairobi, and the Nairobi River isn’t exactly swimmable. So when the coast calls, we answer.
Life in Diani is slower, smoother—almost like it’s set to a different frequency. It effortlessly eases you into holiday mode. You breathe deeper. You walk slower. You remember how beautiful doing “nothing” can feel.
Standing at the edge of the ocean, you’re met with a vast, majestic view—an endless horizon that whispers both peace and mystery. But let me confess: I’m not the best swimmer. So like many of us, the shoreline is my sweet spot. Beyond that? It's a wild invitation I’d rather not accept.
In the morning, the water is calm, gentle—almost welcoming. For amateur swimmers like me, that’s our golden hour. But as the sun climbs higher, the tide begins to shift. The waves grow bolder, unapologetically crashing in with no warning. That’s when we step back, become spectators, and silently promise ourselves we want to return to Nairobi in one piece.
The ocean doesn’t adjust for us. We adjust to the ocean. Its rhythm respects no one. It rewards those who understand its flow—and humbles those who don't. It’s a beautiful, brutal teacher.
And life? Life works the same way.
It doesn't owe us calm. It doesn't promise predictability. It has its own rhythm—sometimes soft and kind, other times wild and overwhelming. If we refuse to learn how to navigate it, we’re left frustrated, exhausted, even broken. But if we commit to learning—day by day, wave by wave—we begin to swim better. We begin to thrive.
So here’s the reminder:
Don’t demand a calmer life. Learn the rhythm.
Sharpen your craft. Get better at living.
Because life won’t get easier—but you can get stronger.
